The 2012 application cycle for the Nursing Scholarship Program (NSP) opens today. The NSP, a program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, provides scholarships to nursing students in exchange for a service commitment at an eligible health care facility located in a primary care or mental health Health Professional Shortage Area also known as a Critical Shortage Facility (CSF).
While in school, NSP participants receive tuition and fees, an annual payment for other reasonable costs, and a monthly stipend to cover living expenses. This year, the program is adapting to the increasing demand for nurse practitioners by reserving up to half of the award funds for students pursuing a master’s level nurse practitioner degree.

Native American Summer Research Internship
The Native American Research Internship is a dynamic summer research
opportunity for Native American Undergraduate Junior and Senior students
who are interested in Health Science research. The internship is
located at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is a
10-week, paid summer internship, funded by the National Institutes of
Health.
The internship focus is to provide Native American students an
outstanding laboratory or clinically based research experience working
alongside world class research faculty at the University of Utah. The
goal of the internship is to support the academic, career, and personal
development of Native American students who are interested in Health
Science careers. Each student will participate in approximately 40
hours/week of internship activities. Approximately 30 hours/week will be
for research related activities, and approximately 10 hours/week will
be for academic/professional development.
Students will work closely
with research mentors as well as Native American faculty and staff
mentors, develop meaningful relationships within the Health Science and
Native American research communities, attend a Native American Health
conference, and have opportunities to shadow physicians at their
clinical practice. Students will also gain insightful knowledge in the
areas of: graduate/medical school preparation, career development,
additional academic opportunities, community engagement,
professionalism, creating scientific posters, and presenting research
material.

Ida Romero Scholarship 2012

As a single mother, Ida Romero worked full-time and put herself through college at UNM. In 1985, Ida received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. Three years later, in 1988, she received her Master’s degree in Fine Arts. Ida was very involved in the university and in the community.
In 1995, Ida was appointed Director of UNM’s Student Financial Aid Office. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer and fought to beat it to the very end. Those who knew Ida were impressed with her strength, dedication, artistic ability, natural beauty and love for life.
SCHOLARSHIP
The Ida Romero Memorial Scholarship will be offered to students demonstrating financial need
and perseverance in overcoming obstacles. The application assessment is based on:
- Essay/Personal Statement
- Financial Aid
- General Activities on and off campus
- Honors, awards, and academic achievements
- Employment, internships, co-ops
- Volunteer work/commitment to community
- Grade Point Average (GPA)
rating. An award of $500.00 will be credited to the students’ account in two equal installments
at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters (individuals of under-represented groups,
single parents, and non-traditional students are encouraged to apply).

APHA 2012 Public Health Fellowship
The American Public Health Association (APHA) announces a call for applications for the 2013 APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government.
APHA is looking for candidates with strong public health credentials who wish to spend one year in Washington, D.C. working in a CONGRESSIONAL office on legislative and policy issues such as health, the environment or other public health concerns. The fellow will have the opportunity to see first-hand how public policy impacts public health and to offer their public health expertise to policymakers.
The fellowship will begin in January 2013 and continue through December 2013. Applications and additional information are available through the links below. The application, including CV and three letters of recommendation, are due to APHA by April 9, 2012. A committee of APHA leaders, former Fellows, and policy experts will review the applications and select the finalists. All candidates must be APHA members, have a Masters degree or a doctorate in public health or a related discipline. In addition, all candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, have five years or more of professional experience in a public health setting. Internships, graduate assistantships and residencies do not count toward the five year requirement.

Travel Scholarships to 2012 Native Research Network Conference

The Native Research Network, INC., (http://nativeresearchnetwork.org/) is pleased to announce the availability of student travel scholarships to undergraduate and graduates students who are American Indian, Alaska Native, Canadian Aboriginal, or Native Hawaiian. Scholarships will be made available to students to participate in the 24th Annual Native Health Research Conference to be held in Seattle, WA on July 16-19, 2012. Due to limited funding NRN, we will cover conference registration, 3 days lodging, and NRN membership dues. Students are encouraged to work with their institutions to acquire additional funds to cover airfare, ground transportation and per diem.
Applications will open April 1, 2012 and will be due April 30, 2012.
